In the beginning, there was great suspicion and mistrust as residents of the Hillcrest public housing complex observed the white, suburban soccer moms dropping off a young black boy after practice with their own sons, the sounds of high-fives and laughter floating from the minivans as the friends said their goodbyes.

OpenDoors Event Helps Children in Need

It’s only four years old but it’s already one of the most popular fund-raising events in the area. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, a growing crowd of supporters will gather for the OpenDoors of Asheville Art Affair at The Venue, 21 N. Market Street, for a “Paris of the South” themed evening to help raise money for children living in poverty. There will be fine art, gourmet food, wine, beer, and lots of great entertainment.
