“I was largely inspired by Stephen Crane’s poetry while painting this. Specifically “In the  Desert”. A creature, naked, bestial, held his heart in his hands, and ate of it. When asked if it was good, he said “It is bitter- bitter, but I like it because it is bitter, and because it is my heart”. The phrase “held his heart in his hands” reverberates throughout my mind still, and I do not think I could banish it if I wanted to. I painted the hands, but my heart lies in the color and the strokes. It is bitter, but I love it anyway.

It’s painted on a recycled wooden panel from an old bookshelf.  When I put books on it, it fell apart and I saved the pieces to paint on.  I like the juxtaposition between a traditional, careful painting style and this rough, beaten board. There is something very human about it, to me.”
