In the beginning, there was great suspicion and mistrust as residents of the Hillcrest public housing complex observed the white, suburban soccer moms dropping off a young black boy after practice with their own sons, the sounds of high-fives and laughter floating from the minivans as the friends said their goodbyes.

They didn’t belong in this low-income community, where many are third- and fourth-generation residents seemingly doomed to unending poverty. But as the weeks and months went on, the moms and kids kept coming. [read more]
