OpenDoors helps to pilot the RiverSpace program in partnership with local kayaking legend, Andrew Holcombe to offer kayaking instruction to our middle and high school student ambassadors. In this program, students learn about their strengths and challenges while kayaking on the French Broad River and in the UNCA pool. The program aims to provide OpenDoors students with exposure to a locally accessible whitewater sport, increase their ability to lead, provide mentoring, encourage new skills, and to present an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.

“Now feeling brave and joyful, this enrichment has made our tween and teen kids more connected as a successful peer group. Stay tuned for more RiverSpace fun to come,” said OpenDoors Executive Director Jen Ramming.

This experience is funded by our $50,000 Summer Campaign, which includes sleep-away and day camps that also include tutoring to prevent summer learning loss.  All of these life changing opportunities that provide our students with safe and stable environments are possible because of the generous support we have received in past years.  Please ensure that our summer support grows this year by contributing here.
