2020 To & Through Scholarship Recipients

We are always excited to brag about the recipients of our To & Through College Scholarships. These two tenacious OpenDoors students will receive funding and support to attend four years of college! Congratulations Eric and JaZe’l! We are so proud of you and look forward to hearing about what you accomplish at college!

Senior, Eric Lloyd, graduating from Carolina Day School, is excited to start at UNC-Charlotte in the fall. “Education is incredibly important to me. I think that’s why I want to become a journalist or a teacher because I value knowledge…School is more than me graduating and going to college, it represents me breaking the mold, and becoming an adult and a role model that I didn’t have growing up.” -From Eric’s Scholarship Essay

Senior, JaZe’l Thompson, graduates this spring with many recognitions from the Gow School in South Wales, N.Y. His wish is to stay in the northeast, and his college acceptances include: Ithaca College, Wells College, Niagara University, Northern Vermont University, and Eastern Kentucky University.
“Despite feeling like a squirrel in a snake cage, I’ve learned how to survive. I try to be a blade of grass in the wind, bending with the breeze, but standing my ground. Caught between two very different worlds, I have learned to be myself.” -From JaZe’l’s Scholarship Essay

Introducing another OpenDoors superstar 💫 board Introducing another OpenDoors superstar 💫 board member.

“My name is LaPorshia Finley, I’ve lived in Asheville all my life. I’m a single mother of two amazing kids, ZaQuantae, and ZaRaina. Having the opportunity to be introduced to Opendoors was a life changer. I felt the need to give back anyway that I possibly could, as this organization poured out many blessings to my family. I decided to help out with math tutoring at Asheville school as a parent volunteer. Given the opportunity to serve on the board is a great pleasure. I’m excited to give back to my community, the same way OpenDoors has done for me.”

Program lead, Tia, chose this theme for our spring Program lead, Tia, chose this theme for our spring outdoor leadership program;

 “Each One, Teach One” is an African proverb that originated in the United States during slavery when Africans were denied education. When someone learned how to read or write, it became their responsibility to teach someone else. The idea is to spread knowledge for the betterment of your community.”

OpenDoors provides student access to the deep outdoors, providing peace of mind, improved health, and points of reference for learning in an increasingly complicated world. Thanks to our partners @pivotpointwnc for another smooth program launch. ⛰

We have deep love, respect, and gratitude for our ODA families. We are privileged to continue this work, and have mixed emotions in moments like these, where our middle school student is accessing these mountains from the Blue Ridge Parkway for the very first time. Please spend your day in service and consider MLK JR’s 6 principles of nonviolent change making (Link in bio)
