Artist in the Spotlight–Darren Green

Sustainable, locally sourced, and handmade.  Capturing the spirit of the mountains…

The Old Wood Company in the River Arts District specializes in artful home furnishings with a conscious emphasis on quality of materials, uniqueness of design, customization options, and a high level of service.

Founder, Darren Green says, “I set out to develop a company that could compete in the marketplace and also be immune to the onslaught of low-cost Asian imports. It is about giving people options, suggestions, and one-of-a-kind products tailor-made for their homes and businesses. I believe most people really care about and consider the origin of their purchases. It’s not always about who offers the lowest price, but who offers the highest value.”

Darren has been involved with OpenDoors for the last four years, as a Donating Artist, and an Art Affair bidder.  He also has partnered with the One Neighborhood program in the River Arts District, a collaboration with Roots + Wings School of Arts and Design, with whom he has hosted OpenDoors students in his wood shop for projects and demonstrations.

Event Chair Dosty Quarrier says, “Darren has been an invaluable asset to OpenDoors Art Affair. He has given to our program and our community on so many levels, including reaching out to fellow local artists. Cheers to you, Darren and Old Wood Company!”

Darren’s piece for 2017 is a gorgeous Kohiki side table made of wood, steel and gas fired clay, paired with an Akira Satake mug, offered for $1398.00

“Each One, Teach One” is an African proverb that originated in the United States during slavery when Africans were denied education. When someone learned how to read or write, it became their responsibility to teach someone else. The idea is to spread knowledge for the betterment of your community.”

OpenDoors provides student access to the deep outdoors, providing peace of mind, improved health, and points of reference for learning in an increasingly complicated world. Thanks to our partners @pivotpointwnc for another smooth program launch. ⛰

We have deep love, respect, and gratitude for our ODA families. We are privileged to continue this work, and have mixed emotions in moments like these, where our middle school student is accessing these mountains from the Blue Ridge Parkway for the very first time. Please spend your day in service and consider MLK JR’s 6 principles of nonviolent change making (Link in bio)
