“Life’s most persistent and urgent questions is, “What am I doing for others?”” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It has been a privilege working with the kids of OpenDoors of Asheville. I have enjoyed watching their progress as we have explored the world of Portraiture. It is very gratifying to see a kid who thinks they have no talent for art discover the artist that has been hidden within them. It brings a great feeling of accomplishment to help kids show their work to the public so that they can feel they have a gift to give to the world. ~Billy Smith

As part of an annual exhibit exploring freedom, Billy Smith (donating artist;Art Affair 2016) is working with OpenDoors’ students on a portraiture project to be unveiled at this year’s Art Affair on March 5th.  The generosity of this service honors the legacy of Dr.King’s vision.  While students at all 13 of the schools OpenDoors works with- private, public and charter (including some students who will be registered to “home school” with the help of licensed NC teachers and tutors this semester in order for them to continue to access their education)- are observing Martin Luther King Day as a holiday this year.  We are excited to see our students observe this National Day of Service through this enrichment partnership and we are grateful to Ginger Huebner and Roots + Wings for contributing the space to make this possible.

You can secure your ticket, as space is limited to this year’s Art Affair, Saturday, March 5th. See these and other contributing artists and support OpenDoors efforts to break the cycle of poverty as we educate, elevate and celebrate.

“Each One, Teach One” is an African proverb that originated in the United States during slavery when Africans were denied education. When someone learned how to read or write, it became their responsibility to teach someone else. The idea is to spread knowledge for the betterment of your community.”

OpenDoors provides student access to the deep outdoors, providing peace of mind, improved health, and points of reference for learning in an increasingly complicated world. Thanks to our partners @pivotpointwnc for another smooth program launch. ⛰

We have deep love, respect, and gratitude for our ODA families. We are privileged to continue this work, and have mixed emotions in moments like these, where our middle school student is accessing these mountains from the Blue Ridge Parkway for the very first time. Please spend your day in service and consider MLK JR’s 6 principles of nonviolent change making (Link in bio)
