COVID-19 Update

OpenDoors students are especially fragile when faced with distance learning, as they no longer have the security and structure that schools and teachers provide each day. Starting off with the inherent disadvantages of poverty, many of our students are at a higher risk for language-based learning differences and are more profoundly impacted when faced with quarantine and learning independently.

OpenDoors staff, volunteers, and tutors are combatting these new challenges through:

  • Increased phone/video contact and coaching with parents and students
  • Coordinating virtual subject-specific tutoring for individual students
  • Providing greatly increased emergency resource support for families
  • Continuing to advocate for and coordinate Best-Fit School placements
  • Planning for increased summer academics to help close the existing race based achievement gap, and the looming “COVID gap” as well
