Parenting in Poverty – A Mother’s Day Tribute

As our nation acknowledges the very special role of mothers this Sunday, we at OpenDoors would like to acknowledge those facing the special challenge of raising children in the trenches of poverty.  According to a recent study by the nonpartisan Council on Contemporary Families, income level has the greatest impact on whether parents read to their children, eat dinner together, regulate media access, and facilitate participation in extracurricular activities.

OpenDoors works in partnership with parents and schools to support students so they can reach their true potential.  This partnership supports parents in poverty so that they have the resources to give their children those daily activities which experts agree have the greatest impact on positive development.  Eliminating the worst effects of poverty in the family can have great impact on reducing the worst risks of poverty for a lifetime.
