What We Believe

At OpenDoors Asheville, we believe that education is the prow of our ship and our students are our highest priority. Supporting students, kindergarten through college, means much more than helping them get better grades. We work with parents and schools to ensure that all students have the stability, resource, equity, and inclusion they need to thrive and ultimately reach their potential. By using a “whole child” methodology, students become inspired members of our community and break the cycle of poverty for themselves, and for generations to come.

Our investments in;

  • Communities provide equity, inclusion, and access to opportunities for parents and students so they can meaningfully engage with their education and the larger world.
  • Parents build confidence and connections, so they feel more resourced and can provide their students the tools they need to prosper. Strong parents offer strong foundations for children, who can then effectively develop skills alongside their peers.
  • Students, along with support from their parents and the community at large, allows them to become active empowered adults who participate in community transformation to break the cycle of poverty for others.

Introducing another OpenDoors superstar 💫 board Introducing another OpenDoors superstar 💫 board member.

“My name is LaPorshia Finley, I’ve lived in Asheville all my life. I’m a single mother of two amazing kids, ZaQuantae, and ZaRaina. Having the opportunity to be introduced to Opendoors was a life changer. I felt the need to give back anyway that I possibly could, as this organization poured out many blessings to my family. I decided to help out with math tutoring at Asheville school as a parent volunteer. Given the opportunity to serve on the board is a great pleasure. I’m excited to give back to my community, the same way OpenDoors has done for me.”

Program lead, Tia, chose this theme for our spring Program lead, Tia, chose this theme for our spring outdoor leadership program;

 “Each One, Teach One” is an African proverb that originated in the United States during slavery when Africans were denied education. When someone learned how to read or write, it became their responsibility to teach someone else. The idea is to spread knowledge for the betterment of your community.”

OpenDoors provides student access to the deep outdoors, providing peace of mind, improved health, and points of reference for learning in an increasingly complicated world. Thanks to our partners @pivotpointwnc for another smooth program launch. ⛰

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

We have deep love, respect, and gratitude for our ODA families. We are privileged to continue this work, and have mixed emotions in moments like these, where our middle school student is accessing these mountains from the Blue Ridge Parkway for the very first time. Please spend your day in service and consider MLK JR’s 6 principles of nonviolent change making (Link in bio)
