Tutoring

OpenDoors engages skilled tutors committed to working with students most impacted by race-based opportunity and achievement gaps.

Tutors specialize in providing homework help, subject-specific assistance, standardized testing prep and in many cases, Orton-Gillingham instruction for language based learning differences. Families, schools and tutors share information and resources to support each student’s experience and overall progress.

During the 2022-23 school year,

OpenDoors provided 880+ hours of one-on-one professional tutoring. This is a 47% increase from the year before.

93% of tutored students felt an increase in confidence because of their tutoring.

99% of tutored students felt positively supported by their tutors.

To & Through
College

OpenDoors Asheville’s flagship initiative is designed to eliminate educational disparities for students of all ages.

To & Through focuses on four impact areas:

  1. Educational assessments, tutoring, and BestFit schools K-12

  2. Interest-aligned STEAM enrichment opportunities in K-12

  3. College preparation and improved access for 9-12th graders

  4. Support for college admission, completion, and postgraduate acceptance

To & Through
College Scholarship Program

Our To & Through College Scholarship Program ensures that all of our graduating senior students have the opportunity to attend a four university or career track program. This competitive award provides $6500 a year for each of the four years a student is in school.

The award can be applied towards tuition, fees, books, housing, transportation, food, or other expenses related to thriving in a college atmosphere.

Along with financial support, students receive coaching, job search, and/or internship placement, financial mentorship support, and post-college career counseling.

In 2023, OpenDoors awarded six senior recipients. We're so excited to be celebrating these students as they begin a new phase of their educational journey.

Best Fit Schools

We support students enrolled in kindergarten through college as they work to meet their full academic potential.

In partnership with families, we work with our school partners to employ actionable strategies and policies that best support black and brown students, prioritizing those with learning differences.

We navigate barriers and, when necessary, facilitate transitions for more conducive learning environments.

This is often characterized by smaller class sizes, higher student-teacher ratio, increased diversity among staff and students, rigor, specialized instruction, new peer groups and other embedded supports.
